AI engineer is the fastest-growing job on LinkedIn: the side door in
AI engineer is #1 on LinkedIn's fastest-growing U.S. jobs list, two years running. Guess the feeder job.
LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 puts AI engineer at #1 in the U.S. for the second year in a row. Most people don't get hired into it cold. They move over from software engineering, data science and full-stack roles. Here's what LinkedIn's data shows and a 30-day plan to move toward the title from where you are.

What LinkedIn actually measured
LinkedIn's Economic Graph researchers looked at millions of jobs started by LinkedIn members from January 1, 2023 to July 31, 2025 and ranked job titles by growth rate (Jobs on the Rise 2026, published January 7, 2026). AI engineers came out #1 in the U.S. They were #1 on the 2025 list too.
AI roles took 4 of the top 5 spots: AI engineers (#1), AI consultants and strategists (#2), data annotators (#4) and AI/ML researchers (#5).
LinkedIn's Grad's Guide (April 15, 2026) also ranks AI engineer #1 among the fastest-growing titles for new grads, with machine learning engineer at #8. The same report says U.S. entry-level hiring was down 6% year over year (Dec 2025 to Feb 2026). Fast growth doesn't mean easy to get.
Where AI engineers come from
LinkedIn lists the top roles people moved from into AI engineer: Software Engineer, Data Scientist and Full Stack Engineer (Jobs on the Rise 2026). It doesn't publish the shares, so we can't say how many came from each.
The median prior experience is 3.7 years. That's total work experience, not years of AI work. For comparison, LinkedIn lists 8.2 years for AI consultants and 3.0 for AI/ML researchers.
The takeaway: most people grow into this title from a nearby seat. If you're in one of those feeder roles, the fastest route is usually to do AI engineering work in your current job first. The title tends to follow the work.
The skills LinkedIn names
For AI engineers, the most common skills on LinkedIn are LangChain, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and PyTorch (Jobs on the Rise 2026). LinkedIn defines these as the skills most unique to people who've held the title, so treat them as a signal, not a list of job requirements.
LangChain and RAG also appear on LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 list for the U.S. (February 24, 2026), alongside vector databases, the OpenAI API, model training and fine-tuning, and FastAPI.
Use the exact skill names on your profile and résumé, but only for skills you've actually used. Recruiters search by name, and interviewers will ask about anything you list.
Your 30-day starter plan
This plan is our recommendation, built from LinkedIn's data above. One week per step. If you only have evenings, stretch it to 60 days.
Week 1: Volunteer for the AI feature. Ask your manager or tech lead if there's an AI feature on the roadmap you can help with. Offer to take the unglamorous parts: data prep, evaluation, the retrieval layer. No AI work on your team? Propose a small prototype for an internal pain point, like searching docs or triaging tickets.
Week 2: Build one RAG project on real documents. Pick a document set you understand: public docs for a tool you use, government reports, a product manual, or (if your company allows it) internal runbooks. Build the full loop: load, chunk, embed, store in a vector database, retrieve, and answer with citations. Use LangChain or a similar framework so the skill on your profile is real.
Week 3: Make it credible. Write 20 test questions with known answers and measure how many it gets right. Log the failures: wrong passage retrieved, made-up answer, missing citation. Fix one and measure again. Deploy a simple demo and write a short README: problem, approach, results, what broke.
Week 4: List the skills and search both titles. Add the skills you used to your profile and résumé. Then search both "AI engineer" and "machine learning engineer", since LinkedIn groups them. Turn on remote and hybrid filters: 26.2% of AI engineer postings were remote and 27.1% hybrid (LinkedIn, Nov 2024 to Nov 2025). The most jobs were in San Francisco, New York City and Dallas.
Hi [Manager], I've been building my AI skills on the side (RAG, LangChain) and I'd like to apply them here. Is there an AI feature on our roadmap where I could take a piece? I'm happy to own the less glamorous parts: data prep, evaluation, or the retrieval layer. If nothing's planned, I have a small idea for [internal pain point, e.g. "searching our runbooks"] that I could prototype in a week without slowing down my main work.
Built a RAG assistant over [number] [document type] using LangChain and [vector database]; answered [X] of 20 test questions correctly with citations; cut [failure type] by fixing [what you changed].
Fill in your real numbers. Only list tools you actually used.
