Position
We're hiring a Senior AI Software Engineer to lead the design and delivery of AI-powered applications on our Platform Development team. This is a role for someone who can bridge the gap between large language models and real financial data — architecting the backend systems and data layer that make AI genuinely useful for our advisors and their clients.
Your primary focus will be our text-to-SQL agent and other conversational AI tools. Our data lives across SQL Server, Microsoft Fabric, and Databricks, and you'll be the person who architects the schemas, validates AI generated queries, and builds the backend services that tie it all together. The AI writes the SQL — you need to be the one who knows whether it got it right. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role where you'll mentor engineers, drive architectural decisions, and help build a culture of learning and shipping. If you've been going deep on AI and want to apply it to meaningful problems in financial services, this is the opportunity.
Responsibilities
• Lead the architecture and development of a text-to-SQL agent that enables financial advisors to query complex datasets using natural language
• Architect the data layer that AI models query against — designing schemas, structuring data across SQL Server and modern data platforms, and validating AI-generated SQL for correctness and performance
• Build and iterate on AI integration patterns — prompt engineering, RAG, function calling, and agent based workflows — with appropriate guardrails for a regulated financial environment
• Design and build backend services and APIs that power AI-driven features, deployed on Microsoft Azure
• Mentor engineers, drive engineering standards, and collaborate across teams to deliver AI features from concept through production
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field (Master's preferred)
• 7+ years of professional software development experience with backend and API development on a major cloud platform (Azure preferred)
• Strong SQL skills — you can analyze complex queries, design schemas, and evaluate whether AI generated SQL is correct and performant
• Hands-on experience building with LLMs and AI services — you've shipped AI features in production, not just POCs. Specific frameworks matter less than your ability to evaluate and adopt new ones
• Experience with backend languages and frameworks such as C#/.NET, Python, Java, or similar
• Familiarity with data platforms like SQL Server, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, or equivalent
• Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and drive technical standards across a team
• Experience in regulated environments, preferably financial services
Compensation Range
The anticipated base salary range for this role is $150,000 to $175,000. Base salary for the role will depend on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range shown. In addition, this role may be eligible for a discretionary bonus. Rockefeller Capital Management offers a comprehensive benefit package including health coverage, vacation time, paid leave, retirement plan, and more.
