About this opportunity
Internships are educational hands-on opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students (age 16 and up). To learn more, visit https://intern.nasa.gov.
This project would assess how ready an organization like ours is to responsibly adopt AI-enabled tools by looking beyond the technology itself and focusing on the broader ecosystem—data availability, governance, cybersecurity, workforce trust, and operational processes. The intern would examine what “AI readiness” really means in a high-consequence environment like NASA and identify gaps that could create risk if AI were introduced too quickly or without sufficient structure. The desired outcome is a simple, repeatable readiness and risk framework that leadership can use to guide future decisions about AI adoption. Rather than advocating for or against AI, the project should clearly outline the conditions under which AI use would be appropriate, the risks that would need to be mitigated, and the organizational investments (policy, training, oversight) required to move forward responsibly.
