About this opportunity Internships are educational hands-on opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students (age 16 and up). To learn more, visit https://intern.nasa.gov. This project will explore where and how artificial intelligence could realistically help the IV&V Program work more effectively and efficiently in mission-critical environments. The effort has two primary focuses AI Application Assessment: Identify tasks that are repetitive, data-heavy, or time-consuming (such as reviewing large documents, synthesizing analysis results, or finding relevant historical lessons learned) and assess whether AI could serve as a support tool for engineers. Process Documentation Analysis: Leverage AI tools to systematically analyze NASA IV&V’s documented methods and procedures to identify coverage gaps, redundancies, and efficiency opportunities such as process consolidation, parallel execution workflows, and industry-standard tool integration. Throughout both efforts, the focus will remain on augmenting—not replacing—human engineering judgment. The intern will develop practical, actionable recommendations that clearly articulate where AI could add value, where it should not be used, and what guardrails would be needed for responsible use. Key deliverables include analysis reports, prioritized recommendations with supporting demonstrations, and implementation guidance. The project aims to drive meaningful efficiency gains in IV&V processes while providing the intern with hands-on experience applying AI to complex engineering systems.
